So she moved to\u00a0Finland and learned Finnish sign language.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Now when I work with students I can say \u201cLook I\u2019ve been\u00a0there, I know how you feel.\u201d&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Teaching runs in Ida\u2019s family and it was her father who inspired her to become a teacher. \u2018My dad was one of the first\u00a0Auslan teachers in NSW. I didn\u2019t know at the time but it was\u00a0hard for deaf people to go to uni back then. But as a child\u00a0I just saw my dad going to uni and I thought I can go to\u00a0uni, there\u2019s no barriers for me. But when I look back I think\u00a0\u201cWow.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I love teaching. I know my subject area and I want to impart\u00a0that knowledge to students. I want students to use the\u00a0language and become part of the community \u2013 they may\u00a0even become my interpreters one day.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>At the Deaf Society, Ida\u2019s role is looking after the teaching\u00a0programs and making sure things run smoothly.\u00a0\u2018Good teachers have to understand the language and how\u00a0it works as well as how to teach it. It\u2019s quite different from\u00a0English, with different grammar, structure and rules.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>People enrol in a basic Auslan course for all sorts of reasons.\u00a0\u2018They might have met a deaf person or Auslan has been\u00a0something they\u2019ve always wanted to learn. Some have\u00a0deaf family members or parents, others want to become\u00a0interpreters.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Having a kit full of activities and information helps teachers\u00a0plan and run classes, which are often demanding. It can be\u00a0a challenge for an Auslan teacher to make sure 20 people<br \/>\nare signing correctly. Each sign involves hand shapes,\u00a0orientation, location, movement, and facial expression.\u00a0There\u2019s a lot for students to learn and one small change in hand movement or facial expression can result in\u00a0embarrassing gaffes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10864\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/classroom-chemistry-teaching-and-learning-auslan\/sign_language_interpreter\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10864\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10864 \" title=\"Sign_language_interpreter\" src=\"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sign_language_interpreter-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sign_language_interpreter-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sign_language_interpreter.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Accredited Auslan courses include a Diploma in Interpreting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Teaching Auslan and educating people about\u00a0deaf culture improves opportunities for deaf\u00a0<\/strong><strong>people to gain fulfilling work, get better access\u00a0to information and achieve equal standing in\u00a0society.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ida says that while it\u2019s important that\u00a0students enjoy the process, it\u2019s a serious\u00a0business and they need to commit time\u00a0to practising and learning in between\u00a0classes as well as in class. \u2018Students really\u00a0have to be able to copy to learn and to\u00a0be able to accept feedback when they\u2019re\u00a0getting it wrong.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When things are going right, pacing is\u00a0critical. \u2018When a teacher gets excited\u00a0they can sign very fast, so they have to\u00a0remember to slow down.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ida says good teachers don\u2019t just teach sign\u00a0language, they teach a respect for deaf culture.\u00a0\u2018Our aim is to shift students\u2019 view of learning Auslan away\u00a0from helping people with a disability to seeing themselves as\u00a0a support for deaf people. In our basic Auslan classes if we\u2019ve\u00a0broadened people\u2019s view then we\u2019ve achieved our goal.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the beginners Auslan courses of Sign Language\u00a01 and 2, students can progress through to the accredited\u00a0courses. Certificate II to the Diploma of Auslan are generally\u00a0completed over two to three years, then it is the Diploma of\u00a0Interpreting for those interested in becoming an interpreter.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It takes a few years for them to find their feet, their accent.\u00a0They also continue to learn once they become part of the\u00a0deaf community, which is so warm and welcoming. We really\u00a0appreciate people wanting to learn our beautiful language.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My dream is that one day we won\u2019t need interpreters any\u00a0more. It would mean I won\u2019t be disabled or disadvantaged in\u00a0any way. She\u2019s\u00a0studying beginners\u2019 Auslan with her husband and two friends on Saturday mornings at the Deaf\u00a0Society\u2019s Parramatta campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I expected the Auslan class to be interesting but I didn\u2019t\u00a0expect it to be so much fun,\u2019 Laura says.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I wanted something completely different that we could\u00a0learn together where we were all at the same level.\u00a0With four of us learning Auslan, it\u2019s a\u00a0communal activity. It\u2019s great to have one\u00a0another to practise with.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>There are practical benefits of learning\u00a0Auslan too, Laura says. \u2018My husband has\u00a0a problem hearing when there\u2019s a lot\u00a0of background noise. He doesn\u2019t have a\u00a0diagnosed hearing problem, just a worse-than-normal ability to hear when there\u2019s\u00a0a lot of background noise. It\u2019ll make life\u00a0easier \u2013 we\u2019ll be able to talk in crowded\u00a0pubs.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Laura knew from previous experience that learning a\u00a0language could be dry and didn\u2019t expect that Auslan would\u00a0be any different. \u2018I honestly expected it to be academic,\u00a0sitting down, doing a lot of memorisation. But Auslan\u00a0lends itself to a different style of teaching. There\u2019s a lot of\u00a0interaction, it\u2019s hands on and you have to be very aware\u00a0of your body language. It\u2019s like being back in drama class,\u00a0where you have to mime throwing a ball or change your walk\u00a0to show more of a stagger than a stroll. You have to get over\u00a0your inhibitions and learn to laugh at yourself. It\u2019s so much\u00a0fun.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Learning Auslan has made a big difference. \u2018I\u2019m much more\u00a0aware of what deaf people have to deal with.\u00a0I\u2019ve really started noticing how uninclusive so many\u00a0things are for people who are deaf.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Laura and her group plan to continue learning Auslan once\u00a0the beginner class is over. They are looking forward to\u00a0applying what they\u2019ve learnt. \u2018We\u2019re having a blast.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime between classes Laura and her husband\u00a0practise finger spelling together and both have made plans\u00a0on how they can use their new skill. \u2018My husband works at\u00a0Sydney University and he\u2019d really like to get more involved\u00a0with integration programs there.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Laura is about to start a new job with a charity that works\u00a0with sick children in hospitals. \u2018My first question is likely to\u00a0be \u201cHave you thought about teaching the Clown Doctors<br \/>\nAuslan?\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p>T<a href=\"http:\/\/deafsocietynsw.org.au\/\">he Deaf Society<\/a> runs\u00a0around 90 face to face\u00a0Auslan courses each\u00a0year across New South Wales from beginners\u00a0to the Diploma of\u00a0Auslan as well as\u00a0offering online Auslan classes at Sign Online.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A move to Finland where she\u00a0learned Finnish sign language\u00a0helped Ida Rogers \u2013 head teacher\u00a0at Deaf Society NSW \u2013 become a\u00a0better teacher.
