{"id":10912,"date":"2015-04-21T11:29:51","date_gmt":"2015-04-21T01:29:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/?p=10912"},"modified":"2015-05-29T21:19:55","modified_gmt":"2015-05-29T11:19:55","slug":"disengaged-young-people-on-path-to-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/disengaged-young-people-on-path-to-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Disengaged young people on path to learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Young-people-unable-to-complete-school-or-to-move-into-further-education-or-work-face-a-difficult-future..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10729\" src=\"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Young-people-unable-to-complete-school-or-to-move-into-further-education-or-work-face-a-difficult-future.-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"Young people unable to complete school or to move into further education or work face a difficult future.\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Young-people-unable-to-complete-school-or-to-move-into-further-education-or-work-face-a-difficult-future.-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Young-people-unable-to-complete-school-or-to-move-into-further-education-or-work-face-a-difficult-future.-1024x815.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The SA Government has allocated $1.142 million dollars to Community Centres South Australia to fund a one-on-one program to help people who have previously found it difficult to study or find work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Community Centres SA Personal Support Program offers mentoring and individualised learning opportunities for people who are struggling to find work, have been out of the workforce for a long time, have never studied or have never had a job.<\/p>\n<p>The program came about through submissions Community Centres SA and others made to the state government about people who were disengaged from work or study requiring a flexible, individualised approach to helping them overcome barriers to participation.<\/p>\n<p>Community Centres SA is the peak body for more than 150 community and neighbourhood centres and affiliated organisations across South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Alison Harker, Deputy CEO at Community Centres SA says, \u2018There are so many people falling through the gaps. For example, young people who\u2019ve had really negative experiences of education and have been unemployed for more than a year are particularly vulnerable.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Three Personal Support Project Officers will mentor participants one-on-one to discover their interests and aptitudes and enrol them in programs or in activities that will help build their confidence to interact more within their communities and then the workforce. \u2018Employment is not the sole focus,\u2019 Alison says. \u2018In most cases, the first step will be helping people undertake an adult and community education program.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Plans developed between Project Officers and the people they mentor will be highly individual because each person\u2019s needs will be different, Alison says. \u2018One person might have poor oral communication, another might have poor relationships skills or difficulties with literacy. It\u2019s about developing different and individual success criteria for each person.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2>Project Officers offer mentoring<\/h2>\n<p>The Project Officers need very diverse skills, Alison says. \u2018They have to have great communication skills and be able to do an assessment in a very sensitive way. They need to win the trust and confidence of participants without encouraging dependence. It can be hard to get people to talk openly about problems they might have. They might feel ashamed or embarrassed and may have worked hard to hide problems they have with learning. By allowing the conversation to develop as a story, a person is likely to feel more confident and be more talkative and, as a result, their Project Officer can get a much better picture of what they might need to take the next step.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Project Officers have been selected for their accepting and positive\u00a0approach to the work. \u2018People need to feel they\u2019re not being judged for\u00a0what might be their inappropriate behaviour and that they will instead be\u00a0applauded and praised for the changes and improvements they make. If these\u00a0are people who\u2019ve had intolerant teachers in the past or strong negative\u00a0messages about their ability to learn, then someone who celebrates their\u00a0success \u2013 no matter how small those improvements might seem to us \u2013 is\u00a0likely to make a big change.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2>Individual support and pathways<\/h2>\n<p>\u2018Participants are likely to be lacking in the Foundation Skills and might\u00a0need individualised support to succeed,\u2019 says Paul Mulroney, Workforce\u00a0Development Manager at Community Centres SA.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We will help participants identify a pathway and then get them into an ACE\u00a0program where they can build skills and resilience so that in future when\u00a0they suffer setbacks like the loss of a job, they have the networks and the\u00a0strategies and a better capacity to get help.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>News of the project has been welcomed by welfare and community groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They\u2019re really excited about it,\u2019 Alison says. \u2018One of the things we are going to\u00a0have to manage is a big demand for the service.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Department of State Development has been fantastic,\u2019 Alison says. It\u2019s\u00a0really been a true partnership where we work on solutions together.\u00a0It\u2019s exciting and it\u2019s evolving, to my knowledge nothing like\u00a0this has been done before and the Department is extremely\u00a0supportive.\u00a0We want to develop a really good model that provides us with a way of\u00a0working differently, of opening up new opportunities for study and work for\u00a0people who are very disadvantaged.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I feel like we\u2019re writing history here,\u2019 Alison says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccsa.org.au\/\">http:\/\/www.ccsa.org.au\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>ALA\u2019s recent policy\u00a0paper <a href=\"https:\/\/ala.asn.au\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Disengaged-youth-paper_WEB.pdf\">\u2018Disengaged\u00a0Youth and ACE\u2019<\/a>\u00a0outlines how Adult Community Education\u00a0(ACE) provides an\u00a0avenue for re-engaging\u00a0young people in\u00a0education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The SA Government has allocated $1.142 million dollars to Community Centres South Australia to fund a one-on-one program to help people who have previously found it difficult to study or find work.
