\"ACE-tutor-Ruth-O'Dwyer-runs-her-first-workshop\"<\/a>A new program encouraging women to take up tutoring in\u00a0<\/strong>adult and community education is taking off in Western Australia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Ruth O\u2019Dwyer saw the ad on Facebook for the ACE
\nWomen Taking the Lead program, she jumped at the
\nchance to develop her training skills. She was one of ten
\nwomen who recently completed the Linkwest program at
\nFremantle\u2019s The Meeting Place.<\/p>\n

As a former professional musician and events consultant
\nwith over 14 years experience, Ruth was drawn to the idea
\nof sharing what she knew about marketing.\u00a0\u2018I had been involved with a range of small business people at\u00a0a health and wellbeing expo I was organising and I noticed\u00a0many were unsure and uncomfortable with marketing what\u00a0were terrific services. I wanted to help and support people\u00a0to empower them to take the next step.\u2019<\/p>\n

Taking training off the to do list<\/h3>\n

Ruth signed up hoping that she\u2019d get some insights about\u00a0the best way to teach adults and the course delivered just\u00a0that. Signing up had added benefits. \u2018It forced me to take\u00a0the idea of running workshops off my to do list and focus\u00a0and commit to spending time developing my skills and taking\u00a0it more seriously.\u2019<\/p>\n

Ruth was confident that the course would be worthwhile.\u00a0\u2018The teacher came highly recommended, and the course\u00a0seemed really well organised.\u2019<\/p>\n

Over three weeks Ruth and her classmates learned how to\u00a0design, develop and deliver their own workshops and gain\u00a0hands-on experience as tutors. At the end each of them did\u00a0a presentation to the rest of the group on topics as diverse\u00a0as baby massage, everyday science and marketing for a small\u00a0business.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was a really small group and we got to know each other\u00a0over the three weeks. None of us had anything drastic to\u00a0prove. It felt very comfortable.\u2019<\/p>\n

But once her own training was over, the prospect of running\u00a0a short course with her first group of students was daunting.\u00a0\u2018I was really nervous that I didn\u2019t have enough content. But\u00a0in fact I had too much and we went over time.\u2019<\/p>\n

Getting to know the people in her group and what they\u00a0wanted to learn about marketing helped Ruth adapt and\u00a0tailor her material. Her eight adult students included an\u00a0engineer wanting to work with farmers doing crop surveys; a\u00a0woman setting up a permaculture business; a speaking coach\u00a0and a children\u2019s author. \u2018They were all wanting to promote their small business so they could earn a living doing what\u00a0they love.\u2019<\/p>\n

Rock music as a model<\/h3>\n

Ruth found the tips from ACE Women Taking the Lead\u00a0helped her to develop and structure a day-long course for\u00a0adults in marketing.<\/p>\n

\u2018I developed a model and an analogy to explain the principles\u00a0and processes involved in marketing a product or a service.<\/p>\n

\u2018In my 20s, I was a rock musician so I used my experience of\u00a0that to take them through the different stages and skills\u00a0you need from getting a band together, to building a loyal\u00a0following, getting an agent to help you grow your business,\u00a0to selling CDs and merchandise.<\/p>\n

\u2018Using the rock star model helped me to contextualise the\u00a0theory of marketing and make it very practical. I divided the\u00a0day\u2019s content into six modules and we\u2019d stop from time to\u00a0time and I\u2019d ask, \u201cOK, so what stage are you at in the Rock\u00a0Star model?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018The other thing I found really useful about my training was\u00a0the idea of understanding the different learning modalities\u00a0\u2013 visual, touch and audio. I made sure I incorporated those\u00a0wherever I could. So for kinetic learning I encouraged people\u00a0to write down actions they could take, I used slides and\u00a0videos for visual learning and handed around examples of\u00a0marketing materials for them to handle and look at.<\/p>\n

\u2018I think it went really well. They all left with big smiles on\u00a0their faces, and have started to engage with me on social\u00a0media. There was a wonderful moment at the end where\u00a0we were taking one person\u2019s business as a case study and\u00a0talking about ideas for branding and developing a tagline.\u00a0And the whole group were pitching in ideas and giving\u00a0advice. I hadn\u2019t expected them to take it all on board so\u00a0quickly. It was amazing. I was really excited.\u2019<\/p>\n

Ruth\u2019s looking forward to taking next steps in her own\u00a0training. She\u2019s planning to develop more workshops and has\u00a0signed up for a Cert IV in Training and Assessment with a\u00a0view to teaching in TAFE.<\/p>\n

Western Australia has the greatest gender gap\u00a0when it comes to adult learning with 36.5% of\u00a0women compared to 45.8% of men involved in\u00a0formal and non-formal learning.<\/h3>\n

Linkwest<\/a>\u00a0is running the program at four WA centres funded\u00a0through Grants for Women Program, Department of Local\u00a0Government and Communities. It’s available for community members or\u00a0centre volunteers looking to develop their skills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
