\"Christine<\/a>Recent elections have brought some fresh faces to the ALA Board. Here\u2019s a chance to learn a little more about some of our newer Board members.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chris McCall (Vic)<\/h3>\n

I manage the Yarraville Community
\nCentre (YCC) in the inner west of
\nMelbourne.<\/p>\n

We are a medium sized\u00a0not for profit delivering a broad range\u00a0of programs and services. We work\u00a0with the most disadvantaged in our\u00a0community with over 1000 adult learners\u00a0coming through our doors to study in\u00a0a language, literacy or general adult\u00a0education program. Working in the\u00a0community and adult education sector\u00a0allows me to see lifelong learning in action every day.<\/p>\n

I really fell into working in the community sector. In my 40s,\u00a0after staying home looking after my three children I started\u00a0coordinating a toy library and was asked by one of the\u00a0members to work at YCC as a very part time admin officer.\u00a0That was the beginning of what ended up becoming my\u00a0passion.<\/p>\n

Over the next few years I worked part time and built up my\u00a0skills and returned to study to complete a Graduate Diploma\u00a0in Community Education at Monash.\u00a0As someone who left school early, I\u00a0am an advocate for and passionate\u00a0believer in everyone having access to\u00a0education over their lifetime. No one\u00a0should be denied access to education\u00a0no matter their age or circumstance.<\/p>\n

Since I started work in the community\u00a0sector, I\u2019ve been on the boards of
\ncommunity based organisations,\u00a0managed a neighbourhood house, set up an RTO, managed\u00a0adult education programs, been part of the working group\u00a0to establish the Moonee Valley\/Maribyrnong LLEN, managed\u00a0youth and Work for the Dole programs and sourced large\u00a0grants for programs and services.<\/p>\n

As an ALA board member, I want to represent community\u00a0providers delivering adult education, advocate on behalf\u00a0of members to ensure that lifelong learning remains at the\u00a0forefront of government policy and ensure that people of all\u00a0ages have access to affordable and relevant education.<\/p>\n

\"Robbie<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr Robbie Lloyd (NSW)<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m based at Skillslink Training\u00a0(formerly Port Macquarie Community\u00a0College) where I work as Community\u00a0Relationships Manager. I have over 40\u00a0years experience working in all levels
\nof education, from early childhood to\u00a0tertiary and business education and\u00a0training. I\u2019ve been disheartened by the\u00a0narrowing focus on accreditation and\u00a0qualifications as measures of success
\nand I\u2019m passionate about the potential\u00a0for adult education to support people\u00a0learning throughout their lives. I have\u00a0a passion for adult education and\u00a0community-based experiential learning\u00a0and I see adult community education as\u00a0a bastion for person-centred learning\u00a0where imagination and creativity can\u00a0flourish. I\u2019m concerned that the funding
\nof questionable private sector providers\u00a0and a lock-step and inflexible vocational training system has limited and diminished opportunities for both learners\u00a0and employers.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also been involved in mental health and disability support reform over\u00a0the past twenty years and I have spent 25 years working with Indigenous\u00a0communities on development for culture, business and reconciliation. All this\u00a0makes ALA a great place for me to make a contribution and I look forward to\u00a0helping to expand ALA\u2019s work across the nation and into Asia Pacific in the\u00a0coming years.<\/p>\n

I continue learning in my own life by listening to elders and younger people\u00a0from an array of cultures, by reading voraciously (an eclectic range of fiction\u00a0and non-fiction), watching films and engaging in conversation with friends all\u00a0over the world about how to be alert and receptive to new knowledge.<\/p>\n

\"Malcolm-Lobban\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Malcolm Lobban (SA)<\/h3>\n

In 1998 after 15 years in resource management with the\u00a0Australian Public Service, I made a major career change.
\nFor the past 18 years I have been working in the field of
\nEducation, Disability, Careers and Counselling.<\/p>\n

I have been legally blind since I was 19, and I have over\u00a030 years experience in the workforce as a person with a\u00a0disability. I\u2019m a staunch advocate for disability rights, antidiscrimination\u00a0policy and associated legislation.<\/p>\n

I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science and First Class\u00a0Honours degrees in Disability Studies, a Graduate Bachelor\u2019s degree in Special\u00a0Education and a Diploma of Languages (German) from Flinders University,\u00a0as well as a Graduate Certificate in Career Counselling from UniSA. I am\u00a0currently in the final stages of the EdD program. I am planning to complete\u00a0my thesis \u2018Education for all … careers for some? Second-chance education for\u00a0disadvantaged adult learners\u2019 by the end of 2015.<\/p>\n

I have a passion for lifelong and lifewide learning, especially supporting\u00a0the disenfranchised adult second-chance learner, and I have taught in the\u00a0disability employment, community not-for\u2013profit, ACE, TAFESA, university,\u00a0and DECD sectors with these students.<\/p>\n

A passionate supporter of the \u2018underdog\u2019, I am currently employed as a\u00a0student counsellor in the New Arrivals sector, working with young refugees,\u00a0migrants and international students learning English prior to entering\u00a0mainstream secondary education.<\/p>\n

I continue to learn. I play in a band, take singing lessons and have a long list\u00a0of things I want to do \u2018post doc\u2019. These include learning another language,\u00a0learning another instrument, taking an Asian cooking class and building an\u00a0Aquaponics system for sustainable food production.<\/p>\n
