So here I was at the age of 52 having to write all these 3000 word assignments. When I was at high\u00a0school I didn\u2019t write 3000 words a year! It really got my adrenalin going, it was a real buzz and I got a great sense of\u00a0achievement out of it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Now Mayor Martin wants his whole city to get excited about\u00a0learning.<\/p>\n<p>It was during his university studies as a mature aged student\u00a0that he stumbled across the idea of learning communities.\u00a0What if the Devonport region which has faced plenty of\u00a0challenges \u2013 high unemployment, falling school retention\u00a0and low levels of literacy and numeracy \u2013 adopted a whole of\u00a0community approach to learning?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was like a light went on in my head. If we could put\u00a0lifelong learning at the centre of a strategy we could\u00a0improve Devonport\u2019s social, cultural, economic and\u00a0environmental wellbeing.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Devonport Council brought together 150 representatives\u00a0from education, community, industry, youth and\u00a0government sectors to come up with a plan for how to lead,\u00a0inspire and motivate the community to embrace lifelong\u00a0<\/span>learning.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Martin said that everyone involved has become aware\u00a0that there is a vast amount of educational opportunities \u2013formal and informal \u2013 already available in the area.\u00a0Making the community aware of the range of learning\u00a0experiences going on in their city and viewing themselves\u00a0as learners is an important part of the cultural shift,\u00a0Mayor Martin says. For example, when people are given\u00a0a demonstration and a chance to practise how to tune\u00a0an engine at a local motor show, that activity should be\u00a0recognised and valued as a successful learning opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Organisations can benefit from partnerships with other\u00a0community organisations as a great way of learning from\u00a0each other. Local charities, for example, could collaborate\u00a0with other charities share knowledge, skills and people.<\/p>\n<p>In response to poor school retention rates Mayor Martin\u00a0is enthusiastic about the idea of a sports academy for\u00a0young locals to offer training programs in sports event\u00a0management, administration and coaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are sports mad on the north west coast. It would be\u00a0great to tap into that to attract young people back to learning. Sport teaches you about leadership skills, about\u00a0how to work as part of a team. You also need maths to\u00a0understand scoring, manual dexterity skills for ball handling,\u00a0and an understanding of aerodynamics to better bounce and\u00a0kick a ball. Sport is not just about physical fitness.
