An outdated website can be worse than\u00a0no\u00a0website at all. But changes in web publishing\u00a0make updating and\u00a0maintaining a website easier than\u00a0it\u2019s ever been.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s our tips on taking back control of your website.<\/p>\n

1. Choose an intuitive content management\u00a0system (CMS)<\/strong>
\nA user friendly CMS such as WordPress or Joomla helps\u00a0you and your team feel confident in making changes\u00a0that are as quick and easy as posting to Facebook.<\/p>\n

2. Select a theme or template that matches\u00a0your website goals<\/strong>
\nMake a list of what you want your visitors to be able to\u00a0do on your site to help you narrow down the choice of\u00a0theme. For example, you might want space for news,\u00a0videos and an online booking form.<\/p>\n

3. Use responsive design<\/strong>
\nMake sure your site is easy to read and navigate on\u00a0a mobile phone, a tablet or a desktop computer.\u00a0Responsive design adapts the appearance of your\u00a0website to the screen size of the device that a person is\u00a0using to look at your website.<\/p>\n

4. Draw a diagram or site map<\/strong>
\nThis will show all the pages on your site and their\u00a0relationship to one another to guide you in where to
\nplace your content.<\/p>\n

5. Hire a professional designer<\/strong>
\nDevelop a design brief describing the image you are\u00a0trying to project and who your target audience is. Get
\nyour designer to develop a website colour palette based\u00a0on your logo.<\/p>\n

6. Invest in good, professional photographs<\/strong>
\nGood pictures can evoke mood, project your\u00a0organisation\u2019s personality and have a big impact. Avoid
\nusing generic photos. They imply your organisation is\u00a0generic when it\u2019s not. Good photography draws the eye
\nand creates an emotional connection to the written\u00a0content. Bad or irrelevant photographs are actually worse
\nthan having no photographs at all.<\/p>\n

7. Use colour strategically<\/strong>
\nWhere possible, use a neutral colour palette to project a\u00a0clean and modern appearance. Small dashes of colour \u2013
\nfor headings and key graphics \u2013 help to guide visitors to\u00a0your most important content.<\/p>\n

8. Choose fonts that are easy to read and\u00a0accessible on a range of devices and\u00a0browsers<\/strong>
\nThe font size should be no less than 12 pt but bigger is\u00a0better. The harder your text is to read, the less of it will
\nget read \u2013 even less will be understood.<\/p>\n

9. Don\u2019t assume people will visit your\u00a0homepage first<\/strong>
\nSite visitors from search engines may arrive on a page\u00a0deep in your site so make sure each page makes sense on
\nits own and makes a good impression.<\/p>\n

10. Make your site findable by search engines<\/strong>
\nThe words you use in key places such as page titles and\u00a0link text on your website are important. Search engines
\nalso value sites that are updated regularly, that other\u00a0credible sites link to, and ones that are active in social
