Think about what attracted you to the conference, what\u00a0you hope to learn, who you hope to connect with, what questions you\u2019d like answered and what changes you\u00a0hope to make as a result. This will help you choose what\u00a0sessions to attend and provide a framework for you\u00a0to evaluate how useful the event was in meeting your\u00a0needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 Do some preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s reading speaker bios or familiarising\u00a0yourself with the program it will help identify how you\u2019ll\u00a0spend your time and help you feel more organised when\u00a0you get there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 Share the load<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t spread yourself too thin. If there\u2019s a full\u00a0conference program it\u2019s tempting to try to go to\u00a0everything. If you find it hard to choose which sessions\u00a0to go to co-ordinate with colleagues so that you can\u00a0share different concurrent sessions and catch up\u00a0afterward for debriefing and sharing of materials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 Participate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Share your experiences, ask questions, and offer an\u00a0opinion during conference sessions. This gives others the benefit of your insights. Peer-to-peer sharing\u00a0and interaction is how so much of the learning at conferences happens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5 Share on social media<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Summarise highlights or nuggets of information through\u00a0your professional networks online. It\u2019s a great way for people who aren\u2019t at the conference to get the benefit of\u00a0your insights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6 Stretch yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Go to at least one session that is new territory for you.\u00a0You might be surprised to discover a new interest, a hidden talent or a new perspective on a familiar problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7 Be social<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mingle and make new connections. It\u2019s a great way to\u00a0meet people with the same interests as you and who work in the same field. You may well meet a potential\u00a0mentor or research partner in a relaxed and convivial environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8 Pace yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allow time for reflecting on the presentations you\u2019ve\u00a0seen, take walking breaks and get some fresh air in between sessions so you don\u2019t burn yourself out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9 Present what you learned<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bring the highlights of the conference back to your\u00a0workplace and\/or to your professional networks. Think of ways you can actively apply what you\u2019ve learned to make\u00a0changes and improvements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10 Note your achievements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Review the goals you set yourself at the beginning and\u00a0write down what you accomplished from taking part.
